The unemployment at November 3rd totalled 2,263,117 an increase for the week of 25,626.
A DIVORCE.
LONDON, November 11
With costs , against the correspondent, Justice Bateson granted Sir Melville Richmond Brown a decree nisi on the grounds of adultery of Lady Richmond Brown with F. A. Mitchell Hedges, the explorer, a mysterious attack upon whom at Ripley by six young liberals was followed by the loss of six shrunken heads, created a sensation in January 1927.
. The court dismissed Lady Brown’s cross petition for divorce, amended from a judical separation. Neither Lady Brown nor Hedges gave evidence.
Sir Melville’s affairs have been controlled by the master in lunacy since 1910. Brown was married in 1906. There were no children. Hedges and Lady “Brown were associated in worldnude., .exploration tours. The allegations ranged from 1921 to 1930. Sir Melville will make an allowance fbr Lady Brown. ! WHEAT PRICES DROP. WINNIPEG, November 11. Wheat futures broke four cents in all months except November. The first half hour saw new low levels recorded all along the list. Shortly after prices sagged still further. ALLEGATION AT LONDON. MUSSOLINI DENOUNCED.

Professor Orespi addressing the International Conference of Young Liberals in London, made remarkable allegations of torture being practised on imprisoned . opponents by Fascists. He said that sometimes the people’s feet were placed in' boiling water, or they were, pounded over the heart with a hammer covered with Indiarubber, or forced to listen to/ shrieks, from nearby cells. He stated Bartolo Bellotti, a well-known lawyer, djed in prison on Sunday,. and the only accusation was that his wife wrote a letter in which she said she wondered where things were leading in Italy. Professor Crtespi added that Signor Mussolini was bringing the youth up to a gospel of hatred against England, Franco, and the whole world.

At the Cambridge Union there was a debate on the question. “Is the British Empire Moribund?” In the. course of ’the debate, Mr L. C. Webb, of Cain’s College, said that' the spiritual unity within the Empire was mythical. He asserted that an Englishman might be respectfully treated in Berlin, but it would be wiser for him not to disclose his identity in the. Irish Free State, and he would probably be sandbagged before nightfall in Sydney.
The motion however, was rejected by 127 to 63.
DUTY ON FLOUR, CAPETOWN, Nov. 12. Increased duty on flour will be considered by Cabinet after Mr Hertzog’s return. Wheat farmers are pressing for a prohibitive duty pointing out that when flour is sold at forty-two shillings per bag- bread was the same price as to-day. It is understood that, Labour members are unlikely ti favour the proposal which will widen the breach with Nationalists. BRITISH TRADE. LONDON, Nov. 12. The Board of Trade returns for October show imports decreased by £l9,v 377,000; exports decreased by £17,667,000; and re-exports decreased by £1,919,000. The principal decreases in imports were grain and flour £4123,000, food and drink (non-duitable) £854,000; ditto (dutiable) £1,516,000, wood and timber £1,326,000; raw cotton £3, 108,000; oil seeds etc. £871,000, rubber £1,245,000. Exports: Coal £BII,OOO, iron and steel and manufactures thereof £l,707,000; cotton yarns and manufactures thereof £4,225,000; woollen ditto £1,377,000; miscellaneous manufactured articles £1,369,000. A BIG CLAIM. NEW YORK, November 11. Mara sued Gene Tunnev for a seventeen and a-hall per cent, share of the latter’s ring earnings. The trial, which lasted for almost- a fortnight. was punctuated by the introduction of sensational evidence, showing that important political figures had been influenced to permit certain of the bouts in which Tunnev participated. The latter’s earnings during the last few years of his fighting career were several million dollars.annually
