Arrested at noon to-day, ■ George Frederick Lcney,' aged 38, was this afternoon lined £2OO by Mr Page S.M., on a charge of dairying on business as a bookmaker. Detective-Ser-geant Holmes said the accused had been carrying on business in a substantial way. Betting books found on him contained approximately 150 and 100 entries respectively. They started at Christchurch on Saturday, the bets ranging from 5s to £l. Mr Page': “You have had two previous convictions for keeping a common gaming house, and the fine I will now have to impose will have, to he fairly substantial.” Defendant was given until 3rd December to find the money, the default being fixed at six months’ imprisonment.
