BERYL DISCOVERY

MOMENTOUS RESULTS

VANCOUVER, Oct. 11

The steel, automobile and aviation industries will be revolutionised if the discovery reported of the highly-val-ued. mineral known as beryl, less than 100 miles north-west of Winnipeg, proves of sufficient commercial value. The prediction is also made that British and United States interest, will fUrnish keen competition for control of the mineral, from which is derievd the metal berylium, which i.v about half the weight of aluminium and three times as strong. It has tin. quality of transmitting its lightness and its strength to ifis alloy. iThe addition of two per cent berylium to ordinary iron increases the strength ol the alloy three-fold, while four peJ cent added to iron produces a metal on a par with the best steel. T. If. Walker, professor of mineralogy at the University of Toronto said the beryl on the Huron claim in Manitoba is the largest and most promising he has seen anywhere in the world. It is reported that powerful interests are preparing to wage a stern battle for control, as the deposits are believed to be valuable enough to warrant commercial production. The owners of the mine are understood to be desirous of having British interests develop and control the new mineral wealth of the Dominion, but strongly»backed interests in the Unitel 'States, including one of the largest motor corporations in the world, aro preparing to bid high fur the deposits. A wjde)y-known German engineering firm also is seeking control pf the mineral, A syndicate of Jlrit. ish bankers has had experts Inspect the claim,

Regardless of what nation finally gains control of the deposits, the present owners have stipulated the entire finishing of the metal must be done in Canada.
