FRUIT RESEARCH
VISIT OF ENGLISH EXPERT. WELLINGTON, November 10Considerable importance is attached to the visit to New Zealand of Mr R. G. Hatton, a director of the Imperial Agricultural Research Bureau for Fruit Instruction and Director of the East Mailing Fruit Research Station, Kent, England. Accompanied by bis wile, lie will arrive in Wellington by the Maunganui next Monday and will spend about three weeks in the Dominion on the way to Australia. Arrangements for his visit are being made bv the Government, and it is hoped that as a result of his investigations a greater understanding of local problems of marketing and production will be acquired by the Empire Marketing Board, with which Mr Hatton has contact.
During his stay in New Zealand Mr Hatton will gain first-hand knowledge of fruit production methods in the Dominion. He is also to he asked to advise the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research upon the fruit research scheme recently undertaken following the purchase by the Government of an. experimental orchard on the Moutere Hills, Nelson. This Orchaid comprises 73 acres, of which 20 acres is an established orchard and tlie remainder available for the expansion of tree planting. It was taken over by the Government some months ago for the purpos°s of fruit research work, ill which the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Cawthorn Institute will collaborate.
