DESTRUCTION OF DEER
CAMPAIGN IN THE SOUTH ISLAND. WELLINGTON, November 10. In a survey of recent events in connection with the campaign against deer, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. de la Perellu, showed what, is being done by the Department of Internal Affairs in the matter. He instanced the withdrawal of protection on deer throughout the Dominion, the Government paying a bonus on tails of deer destroyed in certain South Island districts, which since 1923-24 amounted to £6279 19s 6d, representing 73,438 tails. It now had been decided to pay a bonus in respect of the whole of the South Island. Men were being employed to kill deer in the Hawera and Wamika districts, and it was anticipated that the campaign throughout the whole of the South Island would he attended with success.
