ROBOT WAR
UNCANNY BRITISH MONSTERS. LONDOJf, October 24. ‘The whole landscape grew at first irritable and then frenzied, with the rattle of machine-guns, followed by the deafening bombardment of howitzers, tanlcs and artillery.’ Thus graphically has an observer described the scene when the “Robot” cavalry arrived on the scene at the demonstration of mechanical warfare provided in honour of the delegates to the Imperial Conference.
It was produced on the great natural stage, surrounded by miles of hills, at Aldershot, and the delegates Were profoundly impressed. The proceedngs opened in brilliant weather with i a tactical operation in the form of a compact battle, illustrating the latest type of fighting machines and weapons. Infantry and cavalry participated, but played almost a subordinate part to the ominous machines, which despite 'the designedly difficult terrain, swiftly arrived at the exact spot required. An unexampled, demonstration off the latest mehanical transport and also of fighting vehicles and tractors followed. Some of these were absolutely gneanny in their ability to cross an apparently impossible terrain, with their front wheels pawing in the air while the tracks persistently drove the vehicles
Perfect organisations, timed to the minute, marked the demonstration which was vivid proof of the progress and scientific development of military mechanisations.
