ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

AIR BELL RETIRING. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, November 3. 'Phe retirement at the end of next month of the Assistant Director of Education, Mr A. M. Bell, is announced by tbe Public Service Commissioner. Mr Bell lias over 40 years service in the cause of education. For the past fifteen years be has been in the Department of Education. As a student, Mr Bell won many scholarships and distinctions, and as a scholarhip bolder he attended tbe Timaru High School of which he was dux in 1886. At Canterbury College be won the Senior University Scholarship in 1896. He followed this up tbe following year bv gaining the M.A. degree with first class honours in mathematical physics. He had eleven years’ experience in various schools as a teacher, his first appointment as teacher having been that of beadmaster of a large town school, from which lie was appointed an Inspector at the age of 28 years. For over 13 years, Mr Bell acted - in the dual eapactity of Secretary-Inspector to South Canterbury Education Board. In March, 1913, lie was selected for the position of Joint Secretary of the Southland Education Board and the Southland High School Board. He was transferred in 1925 to the Department of inspections and examination. Fifteen years ago Mr Bell became Secretary of the (Education Department. He was appointed Assist-ant-Difeetor in ‘May, ,1927.
