LADY CARROLL
A GREAT TANGI
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association GISBORNE, November 1. The death has occurred of Lady Carroll, widow of the late Sir James Carroll.
A tangi commenced at midnight on Saturday. Jt is expected to continue for about a week. To-day all of the tribes in the vicinity of Gisborne arrived at Lady Carroll’s residence, where huge marquees and other buildings have been erected for the accommodation of the Maori mourners. During the day between 600 and 700 Maoris arrived, the majority who returned later to their homes, some remaining in the grounds. Each party arrived and was received with the customary native greeting.
Amongst the visitors to-day, were representatives of tlie Taranaki tribes. To-morrow a large body of the Ngatipotmis, headed by Sir Apirnnn-Ngatn, arrived. Tuesdays visitors will include a large number of Ngnit Knhungunas (Hawke’s Bay). It is expected that the tribes from all over the North Island will be represented at the tangi.
