(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
PALMERSTON NORTH, Nov. 3
The Supreme Court to-day, is hearing a claim for compensation for land taken in connection with the. railway deviation at Palmerston North. The claimant is Henry Walter George Ashworth and the defendant the Railway Department. Associated with Justice Reed on the Bench are two assessors. The bind comprises nearly six acres. Two hundred pounds per acre is claimed and a further three hundred for loss of shelter trees, and alleged depreciation of land, due to the Department’s operations. In a statement of claim it is pointed out that the land was taken in March 1926. In September 1929 after work had been in progress for over three years, the proclamation was revoked and the land given back. It is alleged by claimant that in the interim it had been injuriously affected by cuttings and drains and that the shelter trees had been cut and grazing stock was deprived" of shelter. The amount claimed was amended at the beginning of the hearing to £1149.
