THE NAVY

A GREAT REVIEW

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

(Received 12.55 a.m.) LONDON, November 2

Though rain and poor visibility disorganised the programme, fifty-four ships of the Atlantic Fleet provided, off Portland, one of the most spectacular events of the Imperial Conferoncers visit. Three hundred guests aboard the Nelson included Hon. G Forbes

At a luncheon, the Atlantic Com-niander-in-Chief, Sir Michael Hodges, expressed the hope that the demonstration would be some recompense for the hospitality that the Dominions always showed the Navy. The delegates saw how a modern warship cuts its way through a field of mines without sustaining damage, big gun practice, and air manoeuvres which included forced landings, and the destroyers ended n thrilling programme by bombarding CrewelPs wireless controlled targetship Centurian with fourjnch guns, at a distance of four miles scoring many good hits. The Centurian vanished in a smokescreen, almost miraculously thrown out by wireless control. Destroyers earlier provided a massed torpedo attack on tl>e Nelson but did not go within a hundred yards.
