MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
IN BRITAIN,
•CONSERVATIVE WINS. 1
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) , , . (Received this day at 3 a.m.) LONDON, November 2. Polling lor the municipal elections has taken place in three hundred cities and boroughs of England and Wales. The latest results from eighty three councils show.
Conservatives 77 gains 9 losses. Liberals 9 gains 16 losses. Labour 26 gains 86 losses.
Independents 19 gains 20 losses. At Hull Labour formerly bad a majority of four and now are in a minority of five.
At Leeds, the Conservatives now have a majority in the Council instead of Labour.
At Liverpool, Conservatives gained six seats from Labour.
At Manchester there were five. Conservative gains, two' from Labour, two from Liberals and one from Infdependent.
At Birkenhead, three Conservative gains from Labour.
At Salford, four Conservative gains from. Labour and one Liberal jgain from Labour. t At Cardiff, four Labour leaders were defeated, including the Commoner Peter Freeman,
At. Ipawioh, Conservatives won six seats In wards, also one from Lnbour. At Leicester there were three Conservative gains.
In Blackburn, four gains from Labour.
Special interest was attached to the Municipal Elections in view of the political situation. Ailso it was the first since the boards guardians were abolished and the care of the poor bandied over to the Councils through, “public assistance committees.”
Labour made greater efforts than ever to secure control, in order to give
more generous relief. The results are necessarily incomplete. It is clear, however, that the Conservatives achieved notable gains.

Conservatives 79 gains, 10 losses Labour 27 gains, 92 losses.
Liberals 9 gains, 17 losses
Independents 24 gains, 29 losses. The largest Labour losses are at ( Sheffield, Plymouth, Salford, Cardiff, Birmingham, Blackburn, Liverpool, "• Leeds Lfyst year Labour gained 112 seats against' a loss of twelve, Conservatives 11 and fil, Liberals 13 and 28, Independents 10 and 32. “Daily Herald” describes the vesfflt ns disappointing but not surprising. It would have 'been miraculous if, sooner or later, the pendulum swinging to a Labour victory year after year, did not momentarily ewing back to the Tories and Liberal's. The state of the parties at present is:—
