LIFE LOST
IN TRYING TO' SAVE A BOAT.
;By I'elegrapfi—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 28. Swimming out to recover a rowing boat which had drifted away from shore, a man named Charles Orr, ipa!-* ried with seven children, was drowned off Waa'd Island, 'Wellington Harbour, shortly before nightfall this evening. It appears that' Orr formerly a carpenter, but now a fisherman by occupation, left Roma Bay in company with a Maori named Kingi to engage in net dragging' operations. The two men landed on Ward Island and shortly afterwards it was seen that their boat, through not being pulled far enough up on to the beach, was drifting away some distance off shore. To avoid the loss of the boat and spending the night without shelter on the Island, Orr stripped and 6wam out to recover the boat. He had not. gone far, however, before the remaining man on the beach saw him throw up his hands and sink immediately. The second man forthwith rushed in to the other’s rescue, but could not find no trace of him. The body was recovered later in the evening.
