DANNEVIRIvE, Oct. .25

Speaking at the opening of the iXumevirke Co.-op Coy’s new dairy factory 7 at Unnitaoroa, Mr Murdoch, Minister lor. Agriculture, denied abso lately that there was any intention of reducing the vote for agriculture, as the Government recognised that the agricultural and pastoral industry was of all importance to the Dominion. A CHILD’S DEATH

HAWERA, October 28,

As the sequel to the death of a sixteen months old child named Hilii, at Ketemarae pa,/Nonuan'hy, a maori woman, Makiri Kereona appeared at the Police Court charged with assault. She was remanded till November 3rd. It was alleged that owing to the child’s continued crying several blows were administered to its head, the infant dying ten minutes afterwards.

TWO FIRES

WELLINGTON, October 28

An apartment house, 85 The Terrace, was burning fiercely last evening. An old man, J, Needham, slept soundly in a back room and was only awakened by firemen breaking into the building after the flames were subdued. He was the sole occupant and there is little doubt tragedy was narrowly averted by the promptness of the fire brigade in getting the fire under control.

Shortly after midnight,, the top floor of Thompson Bros Ltd. Warehouse, Blair Street, was found to be burning. The fire had a strong bold and was not thoroughly under control mi til after 1 o’clock. As the fire was almost wholly confined to the upper and third storey, difficulty was experienced in directing the hoses on the flames.

KILLED BY CAR

GISBORNE, Oct. 28.

The Coroner opened and adjourned. afte.il (evidence of identification 'had been taken, an inquest, on the death of Thomas Martin Corcoran, 26, married, which yesterday when a car in which he was a passenger overturned on the main road at Makar aka cemetery, after skidding in shingle at corner, the deceased’s bead being crushed beneath the vehicle. The driver of the cab Eric T. Macka-y, sustained only slight injury.

BLOWN TO SEA

GISBORNE, October 28

Buffeted by strong winds in the Bay of Plenty for five days, during four of which they had no food or water, Andrew Anderson who was missing from Waihi beach since Wednesday morning landed near Opotiki yesterday afternoon. On one occasion he reached M avor Island but in an endeavour to return to Waihi beach his open Id foot boat with outboard motor was blown towards Tauranga, then White Island, Whale Island, and eventually Opotiki. Adder son who is a fisherman, experien-, ced a particularly arduous time. The boat swamped four times and on each occasion he found it necessary to jump overboard and bail out the water. The sea was particularly rough. The engine failing he rigged up a sail from a sack but the widd blew him out to sea. On Friday evening he reached White Island, but the sea was too rough to permit a landing. KILLED BY CAB. GISBORNE, October 28. Thomas Martin Corcoran, 26, married, an employee of the Power Board was killed by the over turning of a car at Makaraka this morning. THE HOLIDAY. AUCKLAND, October 28. After heavy rain yesterday the weat-her-to-day slightly improved, but is still uncertain and the holiday was spoiled for many. FOUND DEAD. AUCKLAND, October 28. Arthur Smiles, 60, married, his wife res Ming in England, was found lying dead in the room of his Bdgings yesterday morning. The inquest was adjourned. It was stated that lie had been addicted to drinking a, mixture of methylated spirits and ink. SUDDEN DEATH. AUCKLAND, October 28. Samuel Cochrane, 50, while unrolling a fishing line on a scow at the wharf yesterday, collapsed and died.
