INQUEST VERDICT

PALMERSTON N., Oct. 22

An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of William Mitchell, who lost hip life when a fire occurred a.t his residence in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Nurse Fraser stated she was employed by deceased to nurse his daughter. Shortly after midnight witness found the house afire and awakened the others. All got out safetly. Later the deceased returned to the house for some purpose -“s. Constable Grant stated the deceased was found in a stting position in the bedroom of an invalid daughter Dr Putnam* deposed that deceased had been suffering from heart trouble on the night of the fire. Deputy-Superintendent,. Milverton of the Brigade went inside the building at the .risk of his life in an endeavour to get the deceased. Death was due to suffocation and burning. The Coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, adding that he was satisfied every effort was made by the Brigade to save him.

FOUND SHOT,

WELLINGTON, October 22

About 7.30 o’clock this morning a Public Works Department (employee discovered a man shot in a motor car on the roadside near Porirua. The man’s name is Ernest .George Crane, and lie is believed to live at Freyburg Street, Lyall Bay. There was a ‘22 calibre rifle in the car beside, the man. Crane is still unconscious, and his condition is serious.
