The professional golf championship of New South Wales commenced today in rough/ squally weather at the Royal Links, Rose Bay. To-day’s play was 36 holes stroke, and the leading 16 qualify for match play to-morrow. F. Popplewell is defending his title while F. Eyre (open champion of Australia), and other prominent players are taking part. The following qualified :—Bogler 74—19, San ter 75—80. Bray 78—78, Eyre 80—79. Campbell 7S—Bl, Richardson 81—78, Corry 78— 82, Downs 81-80, McDonald 80—82, Clark 84—78, Cates 79—84, Cohen 81— 83, Heard 81—83, Gilman 83—82. Thompson 81—84, Giles Si—B4. Both Popplewell and D. Spence have been eliminated.

In the semi finals oif the ladies goll championship this morning Miss Kay beat Mrs Spiers. 4 and 3. Miss Gnisford bent Miss Longnan, 5 and 4. PALMERSTON N., October 22. The stage is now set for the New Zealand golf championship meeting which opens at Hokowhiti links on Friday. To-day a match is being played between amateurs and professionals. Although not officially connected with the championship, it consists of four ball in the morning, and singles in the afternoon. After heavy rain last night it was doubtful if play would take place, blit the rain cleared, although a heavy gale is blowing. L. T). Hurst (.Miramar) has withdrawn his entry for the open championship and will be replaced by J. R. L. MacKnv (Tiinnru) while O. Anderson fills a vacancy created by R. George (Auckland) being unable to play.
