STORM AT SFnTTJ'GFIELD

(By Telegraph—Press Association). SPRINGFIELD, October 18. The worst hailstorm experienced here for a number of years, passed over Springfield yesterday afternoon. The storm was accompanied by a strong wind, and covered a strip 'L country between Sheffield and Spring field, commencing at 1.30 p.in. The hailstones were very large, and considerably alarmed live stock, horses becoming unmanageable. Plants were stripped of their leaves, the largei leaves being torn to shreds. A heavy snowstorm followed Die Hail, and at 5 p.m. there was half an. inch'' of snow in Springfield. It was still snowing heavily, with indications that the fall would continue through-, out tlie night. Heavy hail was experienced in the lower country during the afternoon, coming as far as the Main South Road in the vicinity of Norwood. There was a light fall on the Mount Herbert range. A thunderstorm with heavy rain passed over part of North Canteibuiy. At Waipara and further northward it was followed by sleet and snow. A bitterly cold south-easterly wind was blowing all the afternoon, and at 4 p.m. heavy rain became general, putting a stop to cricket, tennis and other outdoor games. Late this afternoon the weather at Lake Coleridge was south-east '>b a overcast. There has been further rain in the back country.
