“LEGS” DIAMOND
GANGSTER’S ENEMIES RELENTLESS. (United Press Association—By Electric i Telegraph—Copyright.] NE.AV YORK, October 17. The police have placed a heavy guard about the Polyclinic Hospital, following on a tip that the institution would be bombed unless the wounded gangster, “Legs” Diamond (recently shot by enemies) was removed from it. Although the police believe this threat to be one from a mere crank, they are taking no chances, owing to continued reports that the gangster’s enemies are resolved to finish him off as soon as possible. Diamond is showing surprising vitality. In addition to four bullet wounds, it has been .proved that he has been kicked and manhandled. He has ribs broken, and one arm is paralysed, in addition to which he is suffering from tuberculosis and an intestinal disordei. Nevertheless the detectives guarding his bedside states: “He will lie walking out of here on one hand soon.” The police have made little progress in discovering Diamond’s attackers. They are uncovering an increasingly wide variety of criminal activities, in which “Legs” has been implicated for years, troubled only by rival gangsters.
