A CORSICAN TRAGEDY,

PARIS, Oct. 16
A Corsican, Francois Federicci, was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for killing an eighteen year old sweetheart, who left him for another man. Federieci followed her to a Toulon dance hall and asked for the last dance. While embracing her he drew a revolver and fired into her body. Two dancers heard shots, but as Federicci continued to hokt the girl tightly, they did not realise it was a murder. When he'let the body fall the crime was discovered. Federicci tried to cover his escape with —s revolver, but was overpowered.
A CHURCH AFFAIR.
LONDON, October 16
Bishop Durham has written to the Vicar of Pelton enjoining him to give notice to the public next Sunday that the sentence of excommunication on three parishioners is wholly null and ' void, and forbidding any • attempt to exclude the parishioners from worship at his church. The. Bishop added:— “Your action is entirely unauthorised, and contrary to ecclesiastical law.” A similar letter has been forwarded to the Church wardens asking them to inform him after Sunday whether the Bishop’s instructions lmd been carried out. A STREET CLASH. (Received this dav at 8 a.m.* BERLIN, Oct. 17. At Cologne knivos and revolvers were freely used in a street fight between Communists and Hitlerites. Five were wounded and many arrests made.
AN EARTHQUAKE
A JAPANESE VISITATION

A very extensive earthquake shock this morning in Fukue province centre, was distinctly felt on a range of four hundred miles. Few casualties are reported. In Ishikawa province, a pottery district, considerable damage was done to fragile wares. Such a ’quake has not been experienced in this district for seventy-three years. SINGAPORE BASE. LONDON, Oct. 17. It ijs learned the British Government decision to proceed with the Singapore base, according to contract, is due to the fact that the suspension would actually cost more than the completion, and embarrassing .particularly the Dominions who relatively are liable to lose more of their contributions than Britain.
. It will he recalled that New Zealand and Malaya each contributed a million sterling, while Australia is not contributing a lump sun*. She is virtually providing for a greater contribution by the upkeep of a modern fleet.
