THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
FOR THE. ANIMALS. British people pride themselves on their love of and care for animals, and there is no reason to suppose, that the standard of treatment is. lower here than in other parts of the Empire. In this matter, however, perfection is a long way off. No one who has deserved and thought much about attitude towards animals generally can be satisfied. There is still a great deal of cruelty in this country, though most of it is the result ctf want of thought rather than want of heart. To the catalogue of ill-treated animales—tamed and shabby tigers, caged birds, pit ponies and hunted hares —the poets might have added cats left, to shift for themselves by holi-day-makers, and neglected dogs. —Auckland Star.
