Lloyd’s Register of shipbuilding returns for the quarter ended September 30th shows that the total tonnage being constructed in. the world excluding Russia, :is 2,569,086, of which : 1,116,746 tons- is .-being constructed in Britain and Ireland; 212,974 tons in United States; 209,307 tons in France; 194,200 tons in Germany; 188,384'.ton's inUtaly;’and. 184,928 tons in Holland. ' The tonnage being constructed in Britain and Ireland shows a decrease of 275,317, and that abroad one of 213,000 compared with June 30th last. Of the total v tonnage being constructed in the world, 43.5.percent.,is being built, in Britain and Ireland, and 56.5 per cent, abroad, . compared with 57.2 and 42.8 per., cent, respectively in Britain and abroad the year before the war.
It is significant that of 135 tankers of 1 1,034,144 tons being built in the world, 122 are motor.ships. The tanker tannage being built represents over 40 per cent, of the total steam and motor ’tonnage being built, which is the highest percentage recorded. ' 'The employment of the internal combustion engine in ships is indicated by the fact that 78 motor ships between eight and fifteen thousand tons are being built in the world, compared with only seventeen steamers of such size.
