MISSING BIG TOE,

LEADS TO ARREST.

AUCKLAND, October 16

Charles Bennett, 24, who today pleaded quilty to breaking, and entering a suburban shop, owes his arrest to the’ fact that the big toe of his left- foot is missing. After the burglary, a detective observed the imprint of a foot without the big' toe. He went to the gaol and found Bennett’s toe wa.s also missing. He took Bennet to the shop and found his- left foot lifted the imprint. Accused and Leslie Dixon, 24, who were jointly charged, were committed for sentence. FORGERY CHARGES. BLENHEIM,: October 16. Y illiam Rhodes Ling, 35, pleaded guilty to nine charges of forging endorsements to cheques and was committed for .sentence at the Supreme Court Wellington. On January 10th., accused in company with his brother, uttered the cheques to Blenheim tradesmen and hotelkeepers. His, brother was recently sentenced for forging the name of G. F. Watts, a local station owner , to cheques. A FIRE. TAUMARUNUr, October 10. •J. Whitenker’s general store and dwelling, bicycle shop and an empty ad-, oining shop at Kaknhi, was destroyed by Are. Whiteaker’s store was insured in the National Insurance for £750 and stock in Phoenix for £SOO and the furniture in the same office for £2OO. The empty shop was owned by W. Hartley and was insured in the State office for £IOO.

THREE ARRESTS. 4 * A CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16

Three arrests have been made by the police iri connection with the recent burglaries. Accused came’before the Court this morning and were remanded to Tuesday next. They are, Melville Clark. 32, a painter, George Alfred Hayward, 24, and Edward Victor Pope, 23.
