AUSTRALIA’S TARIFF.
HELPS TOBACCO INDUSTRY

SYDNEY, Oct. 14
It is probable that there will be a wide extension of. tobacco culture in the Alurray Valley between New (South Walcfs and Victoria. This is due greatly to the increased consumption of Australian leaf and to the higher tariff on the imported tobacco.
QUEENSLAND MURDER CHARGE. BRISBANE, October U. • At Charters Towers Police Court, William McDonald, 127, ivas charged with the wilful murder of Ernest Arps, who disappeared a week agb. From a light aeroplane which landed at Croydon yesterday, there stepped a young man who announced his intention of starting on a flight to Australia. After stating that his name was Oscar Gordon, and that bis home was at Christchurch, in New Zealand, fie oli tubed into tho aeroplane, and flew off. • '( The aerodrome officials have no idea whence he came.

A message from. Kansas City says: Airs Miller to-day postponed her take off .from Wichita owing to fog and radii. ABUSES LORD MAYOR. SYDNEY, October 15. At a meeting of the City Council, Alderman J. Garden was removed from the Chamber by the Lord AT ay or’s Deputy. During the proceedings Garden said to Mayor Marks —“This Council is a deliberate farce and are making this city a farce.” He refused to withdraw and was escorted from the Chamber. CENSURF; MOTION DEFEATED. MELBOURNE, October IS. A motion of no confidence against the State Alinistry was defeated by 28 votes to 24, following an animated discussion. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. NEW TAXATION ANNOUNCED. ADELAIDE, October 15. New taxation proposals introduced in the Assembly by the Labour Premier, Air Hill include increased income and land tax', a tax on dividends irrespective of the country in which they are earned, a flat tax of £2.10s on all persons whose income exceeds £IOO sterling and the taxation of profits made by co-operative societies.
