He was: horn at Thames in North Holborn Hill, London. Ho airived in New Zealand with his; parents in 1864, landing at Dunedin where lie studied at a school conducted by the late &ir Robert Stout. Hey was one of the first, mounted volun-i teers to enlist for service, at the time.,; of Parihaka affair. He visited Dunstart and Gabriel Gully diggings and in 1876 lie conveyed in a dray, a. printing plant,for the establishment of the “Courier” at Tapanui, Otago. He, came to Hastings in; 1885 and. set up’ as a printer. He issued the first daily newspaper there in 1887. He took a.;’ keen interest in local body affairs, being at. one.time Borough Councillor and Deputv Mayor.' He was the founder of Hastings Fire Board, Secretary of Here. aunga Squadron of Frontiersmen, Hon. Sec. Trumpeter of H.. B. -branch 0f,... the Ala or i war veterans. His wife is a member of the ..Auckland Garrison Band. He was a foundation life member of 'Dunedin Garrison Band, was keenly interested in sport. and was an officer of several local ' associations. He was also a Justice of the Peace.
