FIRING A BRIDGE
TWO FARMERS FINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). AUCKLAND, October 13. Two young farmers 'from Bay of Plenty were sentenced at the Supreme Cour tto-dav for setting fire to Kopuroa bridge, bcTween Te Puke and Papamon. They were George Ernest King (21) and Roy Tanneliill McLeod (23). Both were described as members of highly respected families. Justice Reed said it appeared that the bridge bad been fired in order to prevent the residents of one part of the district attending a public eeting called for the purpose of fixing a central site for a proposed ball. Ibis attempt was in principle the same as the action of gangsters in Chicago, and could not be tolerated in this country. According to the police reports the action of two accused was approved by a section or the community and there was a tendency to lionise them. He hoped that the tendency was not shared by the intelligent residents of the district. Accused were liable to life imprisonment, but in view of their youth and good character, lie would not gaol them.
McLeod was fined £SO and £2O cos's, and damages, in default six months. King was fined £25 and £lO damages, in default three months .
