VIOLENT 'QUAKES

The Secretary ’of the General Post Office (Mr McNamara) advises that the following, message has been received from Takaka, in the Nelson district:— “A; Very violent, arid alarming earthquake, lasting for several seconds, was experienced through this diistrict at 12.10 a.m. to-day (Saturday).' The direction was north-west to south-east. The intensity was from six to seven on the Rossi Forel scale.

“Mhriy minor shocks, and trembles, which were accompanied by loud detonating noises, continued throughout the morning. No material damage is reported.”
