FOOTBALL ENTERTAINMENT DISPUTED
“A FEW BOTTLES OF BEER.” AUCKLAND, OcTober 9. “I have no sympathy with teams tliat come to Aucklarid for a gate,” protested Mr George Rhodes, chairman of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby League, at last evening’s meeting, when he was asked U the committee was prepared to assist the Ponsonby Club to entertain the Ngaruawahia team after their match at Carlaw Park next Saturday. The question roused some lively cross-talk between the chairman and Mr W. Mincham, who supported the application for a donation to Ponsonby. Mr Rhodes said that South Auckland had asked for a game between its champion team and the Auckland senior competition winners, and Ponsonby had consented to meet the Ngaruawahia thirteen. “Auckland have fattened up South Auckland pretty well,” he added. 'Mr Mincham: Someone hus to fatten them. Mr Rhodes: The Auckland League and the Auckland clubs have done their share, if anyone has, and they have got very little from Waikato. Mr Mincham: You have to look at it both ways. They are assisting to build up the League game. “And leave. Auckland bankrupt,” replied Mr Rhodes. “We have to pay the piper. I do not agree with this grabbing for a few pounds for a few bottles of beer.”
Finally Mr Rhodes said that should the Ponsonby team happen to entertain the visitors and they felt they could not afford it, they could make some application for a grant, and he supposed the committee could pass it out to them.
