N.Z. PIG REARING

MEAT BOARD’S PROSPECTS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. G.

As the result of inquiries which the Meat Producers Board has been making into the pig recording work, it lias decided to make a grant amounting to £2OO to this important work. The objects of tliL pig recording workare briefly: Firstly to show that marked differences occur in litters produced by various sows and boars, and that economy of production depends upon the selection of desirable and the rejection of undesirable strains and breeds.

'Secondly, to show 'that different feeding practices and the feeding records are valuable, as an indication of the wide range of practices which can be tested out, more fully, by trials at Agricultural Colleges. Feeding records also give information regarding the economical use of available foodstuffs.

Although originally stated to record sow and boar efficiency, tlie result of this work has been mainly the stressing of the importance of different aspects oi management and feeding, and value of certain concentrates as supplementary food to skimmed milk. The movement is much the same as liei'd testing in the dairy industry in its early days. The.value of this pig-recording work cannot 'be over-estimated. : - r::.:-
