MOTOR-CAR IN FLAMES. , NEW PLYMOUTH, September 25. To quick thinking and resourcefulneh’S a Maori named Hawe owed his escape from death or serious injury as the- result of a motor-ear accident at Okaiawa yesterday. Hawe’s car somersaulted after careering madly, out of control and toppled over a sharp drop. He escaped the full fail by (jumping clear and also escaped death from burning when the car burst into flames that consumed the 'inflamahle part and set fire to the surrounding vegetation by crawling 25 yards through a water -'jpipe under the road. Only his quick action saved him.

The steering gear, of his car locked when he was going downhill. The car veered across the road towards a sharp drop into a tributary of Inaha Stream Powerless to stop the car, Hawe'jumped clear when it was leaving tlid lbahk and just as it' commenced to somersault. The car dropped through fern and bushes to the edge of the stream with a resounding crash. . Hawe landed in the water near the car, which was burning fiercely. The flames set fire to the fern, and- the little hollow soon was on fire. Hawe reached.; [safety by crawling, through a two-fool drain pipe against a flowing stream of water for 25 yards The pipe carried the water • of the stream beneath the road embankment. Spectators, believing Hawe was pinned beneath the car, frantically applied water with buckets. They were 'surprised i when the driver, wet through, appeared in their midst in the place where they were filling their buckets. The ear was a total'ioss.
