At the by-election for the Howthn-n seat to succeed Sir A. McPherson (Nationalist lender), who. .resigned, Mr J. A. Gray (Nationalist) polled 11,957, • and W. H. Halse (Labour) polled 6,912. The Nationalists gained over 3600 votes since the November elections.

A serious fracas occurred at#Bulls-' brook, when a party of eighteen shearers proceeded to another station for work and were attacked by a large number of striking shearers. After a fight the men were overpowered and were compelled to return to Perth under an escort of their attackers. Three arrests have been made. DOPING A RACER. A LIFE DISQUALIFICATION. BRISBANE, Sept. 29. At Gloncurry Turf Club’s meeting, Ernest Whiting (owner) and Harold Atkinson (assistant), and also the horse, Constant Bov, were disqualified for life for alleged improper practices. A steward reported he . saw. an injection made into the horse’s shoulder with a syringe.
