Revolutionary speeches and a unanimous resolution expressing a determination to overthrow, the regime, and demand King Alfonso to abdicate, in order that a tragedy might be averted and a Republic established, were the keynotes of tbe first open expression of republicanism the. Government have permitted, since the coup detat- in 1923.
Twenty thousand people packed a Madrid bull ring and displayed anger when a military aeroplane flew over.
Hie Government’s' nervousness was exhibited by an enormous display of force, posted at strategic points and avenues leading to the ring, also inside the ring itself. The speakers language was generally moderate but Senor Lerjoux declared the Spaniards must recover their sovereignity either by, the means that Germany used when she expelled the Kaiser -or, following the Hussions .example. 'z z ; - - Senor Lamoro (Liberal Minister) drew attention to Britain’s example to the world; in political affairs ; ajnd also the education off-the pedple‘\|n honest dealing through report,' to TeU spect the law and clean politics, compared with Spanish; -official corruption. He urged Republicans to abstain from rioting and asked them to concentrate on increasing the strength of republicanism. The meeting has aroused great excitement- and it is now being asked how the Government will treat the., speakers, fc-r although the censorship is lifted, an attack on the Monarch is prohibited. Recently there has been several prosecutions for treason.
