Timely alarm by neighbours and prompt action by the Volunteer Fire Brigade saved the resident of Mr and Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald from total destruction by fire at 4.30 p.m. yesterday at Kumara. The fire was alongside the range and caught the woodwork, nearly reaching the ceiling. The sounding of the bell quickly had the Brigade on. the job, and they made a wonderful save, doing a s little damage To the front portion of the house as possible by way of water.

There was a good attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall last night for the Black Hand Society’s welcome dance, held in conjunction with the Ladies Hockey Club. A very bright programme of music was supplied by an augmented orchestra and all had a merry time and bright. Th© visitors wore made at home and enjoyed .the evening very much. Extras were supplied per medium Mr Parry’s phone, and well received. The members of the Hockey Club were hostesses, nnd dispensed a well served supper, The function passed off most enjoy ably . ' .
