Sir James Mitchell (Premier) said the balancing of the Budget was a gigantic task, owing to the Loan Council not providing the funds which were originally promised for State commitments. Drastic economics, therefore, were contemplated. All civil servants and politicians salaries will he reduced and there will be an increased totalisator tax and entertainment tax and a special tax of three pence in the pound for hospitals, collectable by stamps on wages and salaries. The Premier,estimated it will be necessary to borrow four millions to pay accounts overdrawn last June. It will also be necessary to increase the revenue this year by £BIB,OOO sterling of which one hundred thousand represents the increase in exchange. The Commonwealth is being asked to increase the disabilities grant to £450,000
