CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARS.
The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday, those present being MfWsrs W. A. Banks (in the chair), R. Wild, G. W. Armitage, W. Johnson; J. G. Gow, S. Smith, C; S. Thompson, J. J. Hurley, S. R. E-vison, W. P. Spencer, H. J. Bignall, and J. W. Preen. Appointments confirmed, included: Runanga, Mr E. A. Selby, assistant master.
The Appointments Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Akaroa School Committee regarding the threatened confiscation of the endowment. It had been decided to point out that the hoard had already protested against similar action in other places. TERMS AND HOLIDAYS. A circular was received from the Education Department regarding, dates for 1931, and the following were approved: First term —From Monday, February 2, to Friday, May 8 (fourteen weeks). Holidays: Two weeks. Second term —From Monday, May 25, to Friday, August 21 (thirteen weeks), Holidays; Two weeks and oiie daV;
Third term —From Tuesday, September 8, to Friday, December 16 (fourteen weeks and four days). Holidays: Six weeks.
Who would be responsible in the event of a child being injured through falling on a slippery floor of a school was a question asked by the Committee of the Kumara School. The Appoihtments Committee advised the Board yesterday that the state of school floors. was the responsibility of the school committees. Blue Spur and South Spit:—Re conveyance contract. Renewal at reduced rate recommended. FOREMAN’S REPORT. Mr G. . Bignell reportedßoa School.—At' this School the erection of a new shelter shed was put in hand and finished during the month with the exception of the painting and this will be done later on. The fences - have been renewed where required and the remainder repaired. I have erected a fence around the school garden plot as atvthorised. I also carried out a few necessary repairs to the school building and out offices. The interior and exterior of this school requires painting, also outbuildings. Ngahere School—The painting of the interior and exterior of this school and all outbuildings was put in hand during the month and finished.
Runanga School. —The lining of the corridor in the main school is now finished with '-the exception of the painting. This will be put in hand shortly. Bruoe Bay School.—-This school has had a thorough overhauling. It was necessary to re-pile under the main wall/s also to renew a quantity of the posts, A large portion of the weather boards had to be renewed, afiso barges and caps. Spouting and downpipes have also been repaired. A new grate has been set in and the outside of the chimney plastered. All windows have been eased and fitted with new openers. A wood shed lias been erected and a floor placed in the /shelter shed and a few minor repairs done to the out offices. After the repairs were completed the painting of the interior and exterior of the school and painting of outbuildings was put in hand and finished.
Hokitika Master’s Residence. —The renovations to the front room of the Master’s residence were put in hand during the month and finished. The re-setting of tile hearth is still to lie done. This will he attended to directly a man is available. Pukekura School.—At this school the erection of two new out offices is now in hand and will be finished in a few days. Taylorville School.—'Th e repairs to the fenctu were put in hand during the month and finished. Humphreys Teacher’s Residence.— At this residence the provision of a new wash-house was put in hand and finished. Kanieri School.—At this school the
authorised, work is now in hand. When this is flushed I will carry out the ‘necessary repairs to the Teacher's residence.
Otira School.—The Committee drew my attention 'to the spouting and dbivnpipes at this school. Some ol the joints in the opouting arc leaking and require re-solder:ng and some of the down,pipes require renewing When this is done I will ask for authority to have the exterior c<; tlii school and outbuildings painted.
Upper Koiterangi.—The repairs t< this selloi(i are now in hand and wi! be finished in du e course. When tli repairs are finished this school an outbuildings .should be painted. Harihari School. —It is my inter tion to have both the Wataroa air Waitaha schools painted during tl month. As Harihari is c-n the Iv for painting 1 will ask the Boa-id authority to have this done while t! painters arc in the district. Wainihinihi School. —Some tun ago repairs were carried out t( > tlr school and were left ready lor pain ing. I now ask the Board’s au.tlnr ity to have this done. Blackball New School’.—The mat-ei jals for the. new school are being as semhied. The large window fraim are being completed with other n r ecssary work in readiness to prove* with the bui'ding as soon as the tit! to land is finalised.
