WHALING INDUSTRY
A SUGGESTION.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.'
WELLINGTON, Sept. 22.
Foreign exploitation of the whaling industry in the Antarctic prompted W. Calloway, when speaking at the annual smoke concert of New Zealand Institute of 'Marine and Power Engineers, that New Zealanders should take up the work. He suggested that a State lottery should be set up to raise fundei for the establishment of a company to develop the whaling industry. “To me it is disturbing to see New Zealand goods /carried by ships flying a foreign flag,” he said. Recently there left our harbota a fleet of whale chasers, their flag not that of Britain. As far as I am aware none of the seamen were British.' Here is a great fortune leaving our shores annually. Here are thefruits of one our of our most promising industries gathered by ijoreign-* ers. I suggest the introduction of a £jtate lottery the. proceeds of which should go in bringing into being n State company. Let us use the sporting instincts of people to open and develop new industries.
