! The game between Excelsior Juniors ancl Westport Old Boys took place on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon and resulted ..in a draw, there being no sebre. A As a result of the heavy rain that had fallen earlier,- the ground was water logged, and the ball became very elusive, making handling a difficult problem for most of the players, with only one or two exceptions. The game developed > intoa series . of scrums with loose forward play, and occasional attempts to open’up back play, hut + he latter attempts failed to go far, the backs being unable to handle. The heavy state of the ground soon steadied up the pace,, and. though, both teams stuck to it for the two. short 35 minute spells played, there-was not much advantage to either side’ though the Excelsiors -had 'far more chances of scoring, and.'.they., bijght to have, got •* s t .41 +•* y j . f . over on more than one occasion. .Several shots at goal were missed, the hall being too heavy for success, while players were slipping about in their efforts. Under the circumstances the game was. a fairly good one, but the wet ball showed up the failures very noticeably. Mr D. Breeze was referee, and’ there was a fair number of spectators presen, 1 , in spite of the wet i ( tornoon, though the game was played .without rain, except in the opening stages.
UNITED V. COBDEN.
1 United and Cobden seniors met in the one round competiton on Saturday at Victoria Park. The weather was atrocious, heavy rain falling praci.callv throughout the game, and this assisted by heavy rain earlier, turned the grounds into a sloppy condition. United won by 14 to 3. BLAKETOWN V. STARS, At Victoria Park on Saturlay, Blaketown seniors defeated Stars by 8 points to 3 in the one round competition. The play was marred by the sodden state of the ground. GRAHAM WISE CUP. i The match at Kumara for the Graham Wise Cup, between Cobden (winners of the West Coast Junior Championship) and Rimu (winners of the Westland Sub-Union championship) proved to be a great game as anticipated, and after a stern tussle Cobden were victorious .by the narliow margin of six points to three. The ground was in a very bad state, and rain fell heavily at intervals throughout. the game. In the first, spell, Price scored a neat' try from a pretty movement. In the first! ten minutes of play Rimu stood out as the superior combination and the game from then on until half time, was even and exciting. Cobden led by three points to nil at half-time. In the second spell, Cobden dominated! the play. Soon after resuming, Cobden were penalised and Martyn with, a good kick goaled to 1 make the score three all. Cobden from then on had territorial advantage and about ten minutes before time, Michin scored a pretty try from a passing bout. Boyd, the Rimu half, was the outstanding played for his side, his line (kicking being excellent. Mirichin stood out most prominent for Cobden.
OTAGO DEFEAT CANTERBURY.

DUNEDIN, September 20.
Otago to-day defeated Canterbury by 11 points to 3. Tile game was played in pouring rain on a soaked ground before 2,500 people. For the winners Giles and Laing scored tries, and Souter converted one, and kicked one penalty. Stewart scored the only try for the visitors. A junior game resulted:—Otago 9, Canterbury 6. CANTERBURY B BEAT SOUTH ISLAND MAORIS. CHRISTCHURCH, September 20. The last match of the Rugby season was played at Lancaster Park to-day, when Canterbury B team defeated the South Island Maoris by 23 points to 6. Tries scored for Canterbury by Cottrell, Perkins, Scrimshaw, Potterfield, and Oliver, and McAuliffe potted a, goal. Cottrell and Loveridge each * converted a try. Manihera scored the fMaoris’ tries.
