Sept. 17. The third race for the America Cup over a fifteen mile windward course arid return at Newport started in ideal conditions, a twelve knot breeze kicking mp a sea. Both yachts crossed the line together, the Shamrock holding the weather berth under a mainsaill ji'b and istaystail. The Shamrock seemed to be dipping her bow into the waves. Captain Heard Bent the Shamrock across the line with the best handling in the series, The Enterprise port tacked two minutes after the start in an apparent effort' to shake off the Shamrock, which followed quickly holding the weatlier position and leading by a slight 'margin. Both were footing along in good style under jib top-, sails, jibs'and ptay sails. At 10,52 the Shamrock, for a reason not evident, port, tacked, the Enterprise following at 11.25, Forty-five minutes after the start the, Shamrock's mainsail billowed' down on deck, partly enveloping the crew and dragging in the water. Apparently a halyard block carried away. The crew quickly hauled the big sail in board, the Shamrock turning homeward "under headsails. Before , the accident the Enterprise' had worked up to the weather add was 1 almost even. The Enterprise, started to come when the accident occurred upon the Shamrock but returned to the course apparently to complete the course and diaim ythe race.
The Shamrock had given the bestperformance' of the series showing every 'indication of making a real battle of-’ it. She clung to the advantage she held early in the race until the main halyard parted. Aftei* a conference with Sir T. Lipton on the deck of the Erin, which was standing by, Captain Heard turned after the Enterprise under headsails; but Poon gave up the' attempt and was taken in tow.
The Enterprise took in one beadsail as she continued to foam along, spray from stem to stern, drenching Vanderbilt at the wheel. She completed the windward ’’ >beaV : in 134 minutes fifteen seconds. Immediately on rounding the mark she Ibroke out ' 'a spinnaker and big balloon -sail, but with a lightening ibreeze, the first four miles of the return course occupied half an hour. The Enterprise continued to the finishing line. GIVES UP HOPE OF VICTORY’. (Received 10.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 17. The Enterprise completed the course in 234 minutes. Lipton gave up hope of victory today as he witnessed the accident to Che Shamrock at the same time reiterating, that this would be his Inst attempt. “It seems that the Shamrock cannot win. No single man in England can build a million dollar yacht alone, and without that none can hope to win the cup. . Hereafter it will have to be a syndicate against syndicate.” READY FOR FOURTH RACE. (Received 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 17. . The. Shamrock is ready to sail the fourth race on Thursday. It was announced late to-day that the Enterprise has been officially credited with the third victory. The race committee did not consider any question of throwing out the race.
