DESPERATE MURDERER SHOT. EDMONTON, Septemo r 2. John Chonka, a Russian desperado, was shot near the town of Peace River, following one of the greatest man hunts in the history of Canada. On Friday morning, Chonka robbed a bank at Chetwin, and was climbing into a power boat when the poli -e opened fire. Chonka replied with a ilmt which wounded the Chief of Polio* and then escaped down the Peace River On Sunday morning he called at a ranch house for food, which Mr* Kin Gough refused, and he shot her dead on her own doorstep. A posse soon got on the trail alarming the countryside by telephone. Late on Monday, he approached fhe lonly farmhouse of John Grimshaw, who told him to wait outside for food When Grimshaw brought his gun along Chonka pulled his weapon, but Grimshaw was too quick and shot Chonka who died within an hour, confessing to two other murders in the lonely northland.
