DEAN INGE

PROPOSES NEW MARRIAGE CONTRACTS. (United PrEsa Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 12.25. p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 10. Dean Inge proposes a startling marriage reform in the book, “Christian Ethics,” published to-dav. He suggests that marriage should be of two kinds; one limited to a contract for persons who do not recognise life-long vows of fidelity, this to- be recognised by the State. The second marriage is for life, recognised by the Church. It-Would be a scandalous and most dishonourable offence to break the latter vow, but if two persons wish a more limited contract I think the State should recognise their position as somewhat better than mere concubinage. Whether they should be allowed to be members of a Church raises a difficult question of discipline. Deaii Inge would allow the State to grant divorce 'for desertion, brutal cruelty, habitual drunkenness, conviction for felony, concealment of bodily or mental defects, in addition to misconduct, The Dean adds that be believes if Christ were faced with a hard case marriage he would have said marriage was made for man, not man for marriage.
