ROUGH CANTERBURY WEATHER. (By Telegraph—Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 8. During the week-end and to-day, North Canterbury experienced every possible variety of winter weather in bitter doses. In one hour to-day there was rain, even a spasmodic burst of bleak sunshine, followed by snow, sleet and more rain, accompanied by a cold sou’-wester. i ; v
Similar conditions have been obtaining for the pa.st 48 hours and the stonn continues, resulting in a heavy loss among lambs. HON TAVERNER, ROTORUA, Sept. 8. Hon W. B. Taverner arrived at Rotorua on Saturday, and during the weekend inspected Rotorua-Taupe Road construction works. To-day he visited the State Forest nurseries and made investigations concerning the bathhouses, especially the new Blue bath. He leaves at noon for Arapuni where he will meet Professor Hornell, and the officers of the Department. MOTION PICTURE; DEALERS WELLINGTON, Sept, 8. A 'statement issued by tlie executive of the Motion Picture Exhibitors’ Assn, of New Zealand contains the following: “As regards the hold-up of picture supplies that is at present not causing undue alarm, the.-general feeling is that way gut of the difficulty will he found very soon. The talk of bankruptcies etc. is not justified. The advent of talkies undoubtedly sent many of the smaller exhibitors to the wall. That was foreseen, hut the crash has been less severe than anticipated. Tlie position can now be said to be quite a healthy one.

The date for the Waipawa bye-elec-tion necessitated by the death of Sir George Hunter has been fixed for October Bth. Nominations close on Sept. 24th. and the writ is returnable on October 18th. SNOW FALL, ASHBURTON, Sept. 8. •' Snow fell in the higher lands of the county on Saturday afternoon and evening, and continued more or less yesterday. During last night the area extended right to the coast where half an inch fell. A serious loss of early lambs will follow as the veatlier shows no signs of clearng, MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED, AUCKLAND, Sept. 8. Douglas James Harrison, aged 19, of Albany, was fatally injured on Sunday evening, when his motor cycle collided with a motor car cjriven by C. A. Martin, of 604 Mt. Eden Rioad. Tlie ma,chines were- being driven in opposite directions. The accident occurred within a hundred yards of a bridge over which a motor car crashed six weeks ago, with the loss of two lives.
VANDALS AT WORK. AUCKLAND, September 8. All the tyres of seven motor lorries in the garage of Newdick Bros, produce merchants, were cut throught on Saturday niglit. Three of the firm’s four garages are without doors. Ten other lorries standing near the from; of the garages in the light were not touched. The proprietors have no idea of the motive of the damage. BOyIT DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, September 8. George Corliss Hay, aged 15, died at the hospital as the result of injuries received in a fall from a bicycle. HANDSOME DONATION. CHRISTCHURCH, September 8. A gift of £15,000 sterling has been made to the City by a resident who remains anonymous, for the purpose of providing an orchid house in tlie Public Gardens.
