BANKS’ REPRISAL
PROTEST BY CHAMBER OF
COMMERCE.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 4
■ A protest at the decision of the Associated Banks to double their charges for keeping accounts was made by the Taranaki Chamber cf Commerce ' tonight. A remit is to be sent to the Associated Chambers of Commerce Conference, suggesting that, in view of the special advantages enjoyed; by the New Zealand banks, the additional impost is not warranted. .. . , _ A voice; I suppose ;we. could not insert “a virtual monopoly,” instead of “special advantages”.’ \ It was suggested , that vthe banks would lose many accounts, which would go to the Post Office and thd Saving Banks. . • ,/ ■ One member -said that, in America, the Banks looked for accounts, and even issued free cheque books.
