FEDERAL CABINET. . (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Sept. 3. The Federal Cabinet is still divided on the question of calling Parliament together. The position is described as exceedingly delicate, with a likelihood of a crisis. Mr Seullin has been notified by cablegram. The State Treasurer announced the deficit on New South Wales railways and tramways for the current year is likely to amount to five millions sterling.
THE SUGAR BOUNTY
A REDUCTION ADVOCATED. SYDNEY. Sept. 3. Mr Latham, Leader of the Opposition to the Federal Government, has returned from a visit to the sugar districts of Queensland. He said that he found that the-people engaged in the sugar industry were very prosperous. The majority of them were prepared to accept a reduction in the amount of the assistance now ; given, owing to the depressed condition. QUEENSLAND FINANCE. BRISBANE, Sept. 4. Important decisions made by the Queensland Government are that Government employees are exempt from the operations of awards for the year. The State income tax exemption will be reduced from £250 to £l5O. A railways’ superannuation scheme will be brought into operation, Consideration is to be given to the question of exempting the gold-mining industry from the operation of awards, and that millions of acres of land re-claim-ed front prickly pear, be opened for selection at attractive rates, providing it was made productive in five ybars. TO BE QUAR ANTINED. SYDNEY, Sept 4. The Quarantine Department announced that the liner Nieuw Zeeland would land her passengers and crew in quarantine upon arrival. Those on the Cliangte will be similarly dealt with.
