WIGRAM AERODROME
NEW ’PLANES ORDERED
WELLINGTON, August 28
“The Government have ordered four Hawker Tom-Tit aeroplanes for use at the air force station at Wigram,” states the Hon J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence. “These machines have been selected, as they are considered to be the most suitable type of aircraft for use as advanced training machines. Amongst thedfficers who will be attending the courses at Wigram during the next summer there will be many young pilots from aero clubs who have flown only Moth aeroplanes. Before they can be considered qualified to fly service machines such as Grebes, Bristol Fighters or Faireys, it is essential that they should carry out some advanced training on a machine of greater power and .speed than the modern light aeroplanes. Every endeavour will therefore, be. made for these Tom-Tits to arrive in New Zealand before the end of this year. The engine is a 130 h.p. Mongoose, made by the Armstrong Siddeley Company, and the cruising speed of the machine is given as 110 miles per hour.”
