ESTABLISHING AN ARCTIC AIR ROUTE. [United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.j (Received this day at 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 29. The British Expedition, which is seeking to establish a route for an all-British flying service across the Arctic to Canada, in a report froii) the base camp, dated Aug. Bth. states: “We reached the edge of drift ice forty miles off the east coast of Greenland on July 20th. We had difficulty in forcing our way and on the way we had to. shoot seals to feed ourselves and forty-nine’dogs. A man . with a rifle stood in the bows of the “Quest.” The Eskimos, in kayaks (men’s boats) which can turn completely over and still retain the occupants and umiaks (women’s boats), which arc larger, flocked out from Angmagsalik to meet us. | We found a site for the base camp 3j5 miles west of Angmagsalik, and rowed the stores, including fifteen toils of coal, ashore covering ourselves with coal dust. We completed a ed hut.
Scott and Chapman, with the dog teams, explored the. ice plateau fol* ft sledge route. The ice was heavily erevassed necessitating care on the first, two journeys, We start on Aug, 18th. to the ice plateau to establish a meteorological station, 140 miles inland from where we will study the flying conditions, the staff being Scott, Rymill, Bingham, Riley and Lindsay. Another party takes the Quest northeastward to map a coastal mountain belt, because the proposed air route will probably cross here. The weather is most suitable for air photography.
