SIR MAUI POMARE
ASHES RECEIVED BY MAORIS. (By Telegraph-—Per Press Association.' NEW PLYMOUTH, August 29. With sitL due ceremonial and in traditional Maori style, the ashes of the late Sit' Maui Pomnre arrived from Waikanai this morning and were received at Manukonihi Pa, the Waitara headquarters of his tribe. Tlie train brought Hons. Masters, Coates, Smith, Nga-ta and 16 other members of Parliament, some with their wives. The chief mourners were Lady Pomare, her daughter and two sous. The casket was taken from the station to the Pa in a hearse. At the gates of the Pa a group of 100 native women received the ashes with mae mae dances wearing and waving greenery. They receded before the warriors bearing the casket till the latter was laid among beautiful rugs and mats on the centre of the marae. Speeches followed in tribute of Sir Maui Pomare’s work.
About 2,500 people were at the Pa. The funeral will probably take place on Sunday.
