Attacked by a vicious jersey bull yesterday on his farm at Hawera, Evan Evans was severely gored about the thigh besides suffering severe chest bruises, and but for the timely intervention of his son who drove the animal off with a pitch fork he woula probably have been fatally injured. He was removed to the hospital and operated upon. He is progressing satisfactorily.

SAD FATALITY. HAWERA, August 25. Frightfully injured about the • head and face, George Morecraft, ugea 80, was found lying near the milking shod on his son’s farm at Mantua, yesterday morning with a shot gun between Ins legs. When Hugh Thomas Riley, a relief worker, was returning to camp from Ohura on Saturday he missed the step and fell from the overhead bridge to the road below, sustaining injuries from which he died half an hour later. At Greyttiouth court this morning, Herbert Sutherland Fielding, aged '2o, was sentenced to six witiths on each of three charges of theft and one. charge of unlawful conversion of a car, sentences to be concurrent, He was also committed for sentence on two charges of breaking and entering, CHILD BURNT. DUNEDIN, August 25. Gladys Ward aged 2$ years was badly burned yesterday morning when the paper she was playing with before, the fire caught alight. She was hospitnlled. ACCIDENTLY SHOT. PALMERSTON N., August 25. While out rabbit shooting yesterday a lad named Maurice Danks, aged 15, was accidently shot by a companion with a pea rifle but fortunately no vital organs were affected. Danks was about to gather in a rabbit which had been wounded when the animal commenced to move. His companion fired stricking Danks in the back. He was operateed on this morning.
