FRAUD OHAIIGEJB, (Bv Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Aug, 20, Ehenezer Martin. Swinerd was admitted to probation for three years on a charge of obtaining money and goods to the value of £33 18s 7d by means of valueless cheques, and on twelve other charges of false pretences, lie was ordered to come up for sentence.if called upon in three years. Accused admitted the charges. Sub-Inspector Ward said he was a married man with four children, The cause of the trouble was gambling and unemployment. Air Meltzor for the accused said it was one of the most distressing cases which came under his notice for some time. The offences were committed when accused was at his wits end with a wile and four starving children to keep.
THEFT CHARGES. THREE ARRESTS. DANNEVIRKE, August 20. Three local men, George Edwards (30), a motor mechanic; William Harry Edwards (25), a labourer; and Lea Patrick Ellison, 27, a labourer, appeared at Court this morning charged with having broken and entered Yates cash stores on August 11 and stolen goods, cheques, and money to the total value of £4O 15s. They were remanded until to-morrow, the police stnting the charge had been admitted and some of the property recovered, BULLED GORGE. RE-OPENED IN NOVEMBER, WELLINGTON, Aug, 20. In reply to a question Hon. W. B. Taverner informed )a reporter that the main highway through the Buller Gorge, which was completely blocked by the big earthquake, will be again open for through traffic early in November, Some of the slips will bo a danger for some time, however, particularly during the periods of heavy rain even though everything is being done to ensure public safety.
FORGERY AND UTTERING. WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. Rov Claude Butler, Henry Lovell Draper and James McLaren admitted to a total of twenty two charges of forgery and uttering, and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. CAR CONVERSION. WELLINGTON, Aug. 29. Robert Edward Cobh, for unlawfully converting to his own use a motor car valued at £l2O was fined £2O in default three months. Cobb had been previously convicted on a simila<r offence eight months ago. On the night in question he had taken some liquor and the companions were drunk and that lent an additional danger.
