MINISTERS PROMISE. (By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. If the settlers in different districts in which branch lines have been closed, will form themselves into* a Vigun*. Committee and make an effort to increase the business of the railways, the minister, Mr Veitcli, is prepared to consider the re-opening of lines. This promise was given to a deputation to-clay from, Ashburton district, which pointed out that many fanners would suffer through, the closing of the four miles of ‘railway from Mount Members to Spi'ingburn. The deputation pointed out that tiie country served required heavy top dressing and tanners relied on the railways for the carriage of fertilisers.
Mr Veitcli agreed that top dressing was a great factor in increasing the production of a iai'm, hut pointed out the loss on the line was over £10() per annum. He knew the closing of the line was a serious*’ thing for the farmers but the financial position of the railways was also a* serious thing for the Government.
