MELBOURNE SHIPPING SERVICE

SOUTHLAND FARMERS CRITICISED.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, August 19.

The recent resolution of a meeting of Southland Farmers that the Melbourne service with the South Island did not warrant a subsidy has drawn a reply from the Hon R.. A. de la Perelle. Had the farmers known the position, the Minister says, they would not have passed the resolution. When the service was first established the. subsidy was fixed at £36,000 a year, but none of it was paid owing to the unfortunate loss of the Manuka and the immediate disruption of arrangements. The three weeks service had been kept- up and the subsidy was £SOO a month of £6OOO a year, He thought the money well spent to give the South Island a service in line with the North Island.
