WOMEN’S CONFERENCE

DELIBERATIONS AT HONOLULU. (United Prßee Association—By Electric Telegraph'—Copyright). HONOLULU, August 15. After outlining the history of the women’s movement at last night’s session of; the Women’s Pail-Pacific Conference Doctor Sweet suggested a part that women might play in international relationships. She said that .peace, to be permanent, must be •founded on right conditions —knowledge of others’ needs and problems, appreciation of each other’s work, and contributions to the solution of the world’s problems. Referring to the _ future of the Pan-Pacific Women’s Conference, she reviewed the possibility of working' under other organisations, and said that if a. demand existed for the type of work that periodical women’s conferences could compass, then they must depend upon their own •organisatioii for a ■ continuance. In .tne discussion which followed the leaders of the delegations from all the .countries expressed a strong sense ol the value of the contacts made, and the -knowledge gained. Dame Rachel Crowdy said she had been sceptical- before coming to the Conference.. She had been eager to meet the women, hut she had been doubtful of the necessity of a conference separate from that of the men. \She. now felt, however, that this conference was of extraordinary value. Until the conditions of work and life for women in all countries were more stable, valuable contributions would be given at women’s conferences by women not likely to attend a mixed Conference.

Consideration of future plans will be continued next week. Great interest was manifested this morning in a paper describing conditions and protective provisions especially for children in the cinema industry. It was read by Miss Marian Mel. of the Central Casting Corporation, Hollywood. .4“’ ... - 'i.ki: !: Mrs jßope,' k Chairman of the:special Hawaiian .'inquiry, also: read 'a i paper on tbb ;cinema ‘ as!an educational vaiut recreationaT factor in community life. ; i ;•. • ; i ri: >5 ;> •.*; *\ ; i, ; } i. . . ; . ' : PARTIES AND GROUPINGS. HONOLULU, August 17. Opportunity is! being taken of the fact that the majority of the delegates to the Women’s Pan-Pacific Congress are University graduates to arrange a group meeting of members of the International Federation 61 University Women. This took the form of a Sunday breakfast on the verandah of the Honolulu Country Club, which is beautifully . situated, commanding views over the golf links on one side and the sea on the other, and also , of mountains. There were 66 graduates present, and they' discussed the possibility of closer co-operation with the Federation Pacific Group. The Y.W.C.A. representatives are also holding group meetings. The programme for the second week of the .conference includes an. address by Dr Ethel Osborne pn industrial hygiene,,; and by Mrs Bertha Lindes, a former Mayor of Seattle, on municipal social service. The most delightful of many parties given yesterday was in the lovely grouiids of Mrs Frederick Lowrey, where picturesque groups of Hawaiians, Filipinos, and Chinese and Japanese children presented national .ceremonies and dances.
