TRAIN STRIKES CHILD. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association). WELLINGTON, August 13. Knocked down by a city-bound train at about 3.45 p.m. to-day, Isabel Frances Orr, aged 5 years, of Marlborough Street, Silverstream, received a fracture of the left ann., and also suffered from concussion. The little girl was brought by the train to Lambton Station and conveyed, to the hospital by the ambulance. Reports from the hospital last to-night stated that her condition was serious and that slie had not regained' consciousness. Later word stated that sheldied. CRITICS OF EDUCATION REPORT. AUCKLAND, August 13. Tho Old Boys Association of the Auckland Grammar School, in a considered and hostile opinion of the Atmore report, invite support “not only of the old . boys of Auckland Grammar School, but of the old 'boys of ail our historical State secondary schools, to - repel this attack on schools to which we owe so much.’ In the course of a long resolution/the Association asserts the report displays unexpected hostility to the school spirit and tradition, and anxiety to destroy school prestige. Amongst other objection, it says the proposed herding ol all teachers into one class will depreciate the qualifications of secondary teachers and make education a dead thing without the life-blood of personal interest. HOUSE OWNER’S QUANDARY. WELLINGTON, August' 13. A house owner in Lower Hutt Borough will find herself in an awkward position, owing to neglect of by laws. She recently built a house without obtaining a permit, and through her solicitor asked permission to complete the drainage and plumbing. The council took the view-th.at to grant the request would simply be condoning the offence, and 'refused.
